Food waste issue

How to reduce food waste

Food waste - too good for the bin

In terms of quantity, household food waste accounts for the largest proportion of food losses. The European Commission estimates that at EU level, 53% of all food thrown away is thrown away by private households.

The main causes are a lack of purchasing planning, improper storage and misunderstood best-before dates.

In total, 357.700 tons of food and leftover food end up in the trash every year, with vegetables, bread and dairy products topping the “throwaway” list.

In an average household, a quarter of the food purchased is thrown away. That's why we recommend storing them in our NaKu bags. Food is kept fresh for longer and less is thrown away. Good for the environment, good for your wallet!

Food waste - shop consciously

Shop consciously! Plan what will be on the table before you go shopping. This means you buy less and less goes into the trash.

Food waste - preserving food

Preserve food! Fruit and vegetables can be perfectly preserved and easily saved from the trash can.

Food waste - Check it! Listen to your senses!

Check it out! Listen to your senses! If the best before date (BBD) has expired, that does not mean that something is no longer edible. You can use your senses to find out whether it is still edible. If it looks, smells and tastes good, then you can eat it without any problems. But be careful with meat and fish! The consumption date should be adhered to here.

Food waste - use leftovers

Use leftovers! Have you cooked too much and there will be some leftover. Don't throw away the leftovers, use them instead! With a little creativity, you can turn leftovers into a great meal.

Food waste - store food in the NaKu bag!

Store food in the NaKu bag! Our bags made of natural plastic keep food fresher for longer and thus save food from the trash can. Put bread, vegetables or fruit in the NaKu bag and tie it shut.

Food waste - take part in food sharing initiatives!

Join food sharing! With food sharing, you can offer food for pickup in supermarkets, restaurants, bakeries, etc.
There is also the option of bringing groceries and food to so-called fair sharers (shelves and refrigerators).

Food waste - give away edible food!

Give the gift of edible food! Have you been away from home for a while and do you still have edible food left? Maybe your neighbors or friends will be happy about it.
