Waste less food!

Use NaKu bags!

Food is valuable!

A third of all food in the world ends up in landfill. In the EU, 173 kilograms of food are thrown away per person every year.

That makes a total of 88 million tons of waste per year. In Austria it is 760.000 tons. A good half of these are considered potentially avoidable. 53% of all food thrown away is accounted for by private households. In an average household, a quarter of the groceries bought are thrown away. The main causes are a lack of purchasing planning, improper storage and misunderstood best-before dates.

Why do we throw away food? There are many misunderstandings, especially when it comes to the best-before date (MHD): It is not a “recommended disposal date”. Rather, it can be compared to a guarantee. No one would throw away their electronics after the warranty has expired. The same should apply to food.

Most consumers do not control their food. But if a product still looks, smells and tastes good, then you can eat it without hesitation even after the best-before date has expired. There is still room for improvement with regard to storage. Many store their food unsealed or loose, exposed to air, which can reduce food freshness. NaKu has a solution for exactly this.

Too good for the bin. Against food waste

NaKu bags made of natural plastic keep food fresh longer and save it from the dustbin. Less food waste with NaKu.

Biogenic packaging from NaKu

NaKu keeps food fresh for longer

Our biogenic packaging made of natural plastic is particularly breathable. Packaged baked goods, fruit and vegetables stay fresh longer in a breathable environment and are less prone to mould.

The material and manufacturing process of the NaKu bag have been perfected over the years to create an optimal climate for storing food in the bag. The taste, appearance and weight of the food are hardly changed by storage. There is less bacterial contamination and dehydration is counteracted.

You can thus preserve the quality of the food for longer and thus save it from being thrown away - actively combating food waste.

By storing your food in NaKu Sackerl, you protect valuable food resources, the environment and your wallet! Less food thrown away also means less CO2, one only thinks of, for example, the elimination of unnecessary transport.

BOKU freshness study

Apples from the BOKU freshness study
Lettuce from the BOKU freshness study
Pastries from the BOKU freshness study

A study by BOKU shows that fruit, vegetables and bread stay fresh longer in NaKu organic bags. In the course of the study, the food was stored in three different ways: open, in conventional plastic bags made from petroleum and in NaKu bags made from natural and rapidly renewable raw materials from European agriculture. Apples, mangoes, tomatoes, lettuce, chanterelles, bread and rolls were examined.

The foods were evaluated for appearance, smell, taste, weight loss and infestation with microorganisms over a number of test days. The products were then ranked by storage variant with regard to their evaluation and an overall evaluation was carried out. For all the foods tested, the NaKu bag made of natural plastic performed better than the conventional plastic bag made from petroleum and open storage. Second best is open storage. On the other hand, the tasters rated the products from the conventional plastic bags as the worst without exception.

BOKU is the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna and is dedicated to the topic of sustainability and the management of natural resources in teaching and research.

The study results for the NaKu products

When storing apples, the NaKu bag clearly wins over the plastic bag and open storage. The taste and appearance was rated as the best on all five test days in the NaKu bag. Even after 3 months, the apples in the NaKu bag were still rated as natural and fresh.

Mangoes stored in NaKu bags stay fresh longer than mangoes in plastic bags or stored open. After 17 days, bacterial and fungal growth was less advanced in mangoes in the NaKu bag than in the other storage variants.

A tight result, but the NaKu bag also wins over the plastic bag and open storage for tomatoes. Samples from the NaKu bag had the least bacterial contamination, but when it came to fungal contamination, open storage was just the best. In terms of taste, these two variants are the same, but the NaKu bag scores points because less weight is lost and the tomatoes don't dry out as quickly.

Lettuce in a plastic bag developed an unpleasant musty smell after just two days and started to rot after a week. Stored open, on the other hand, lettuce began to wilt after two days and spoiled after 10 days. In the NaKu bag, the salad was still edible after two weeks.

Chanterelles stored in the NaKu bag retained their fresh appearance and fresh, typical smell during the first 8 days of storage. They looked almost freshly harvested, only the edges of the mushroom caps dried slightly in some places during the second week and turned dark. Stored openly, this happened after just one week. A foul smell developed in the plastic bag after a very short time. The mushrooms in the NaKu bag still retained their typical smell 3 weeks later.

Bread in the NaKu bag can be enjoyed for nine days, stored open only four days. In the plastic bag, on the other hand, it quickly loses its taste, even if the consistency is retained for the longest time. It was similar with the rolls. Stored open, the rolls were already hard after one day, in the NaKu bag only after two days. The rolls stayed soft for four days in the plastic bag, but lost their typical taste after just one day.

The NaKu Sackerl is made from European corn starch.

The natural plastic feels pleasantly soft and velvety to the touch and is nevertheless tear-resistant.
