SUSFERT and NaKu announce collaboration: Together for a sustainable future

NaKu, a pioneer of sustainability

NaKu, a pioneer of sustainability, stands for “Natural Plastic”, which combines the characteristic properties of plastic with natural, sustainable components. NaKu products, which consist primarily of plastic-free* bottles and bags, are all fully compostable and recyclable. In addition to these bioplastic products, NaKu is actively committed to environmental protection and develops customized bioplastic plant bags to support nature conservation initiatives.

Often, and especially in regions where plants are exposed to stress due to the climate, trees are planted with protective bags around their roots, which allow a better supply of nutrients in the first year of growth. However, the remains of these bags cannot decompose completely and remain in the ground, which in turn has a negative impact on the quality of the soil. NaKu has therefore developed a unique formula for its “plastic-free* plant bags” so that they last as long as young trees need them. After a certain period of time, they finally dissolve completely and naturally until they are completely integrated into the humus and no longer leave any negative substances behind. NaKu also applies this proactive sustainability approach to applications that affect our daily lives - for packaging of cosmetics, toys and many other products that are in demand.

SUSFERT, sustainable agriculture for healthy food and a healthy planet

The SUSFERT project is also a pioneer in the effort to find sustainable solutions for agriculture. One of the main goals is to reduce soil pollution by reducing the frequency of fertilizer application. Any other initiatives that help remove other contaminants such as plastic and other harmful compounds from the soil are also important. SUSFERT's approach is diverse and aims to demonstrate a range of innovative green technologies together.

These range from the use of novel microorganism combinations on the one hand to bio-based phosphorus replacement on the other. To date, SUSFERT has developed nine sustainable, bio-based fertilizer prototypes that are currently being tested in field trials, and initial results indicate significantly positive results.

What doesn't seem feasible at first glance - combining plastic properties with natural components - turns out to be not only a nice-to-have for the environment, but is actually a necessary development to ensure people's long-term well-being.

Co-founder of NaKu

Earlier this year, NaKu provided SUSFERT with its plastic-free* bottles for the “SUSKIT”, a set of fertilizer prototypes for demonstration purposes. Since then, SUSKIT has been presented at numerous events and will be presented in a permanent exhibition in collaboration with the sponsors of the BBI/CBE and the European Commission at the end of 2023.

NaKu and SUSFERT have agreed and announced that they will deepen their cooperation in the future. The aim of the collaboration is to show how like-minded companies and projects can come together to work towards the common goal of transitioning to a sustainable future for all, and to activate synergies to make success more visible. Sustainable practices are essentially not an exercise in sacrifice, but should provide an opportunity for new sustainable products, enable job creation, and allow people to strive and economies to grow.
