NaKu & the garden center Ganger
About the garden center Ganger
Today we would like to introduce one of our long-standing customers - the garden center Ganger.
During our visit, Daniel Ganger also took us through the entire operation, starting with the Abhof shop, through the plant market with beautiful balcony and garden plants to the cultivation of organic vegetables and organic herbs. We were able to take a lot of interesting information with us and were enthusiastic about the selection - but more on that later.
The Ganger nursery, which has been in existence for more than 120 years, is being run by the fourth generation with young people and their successors and attaches great importance to regionality, quality and sustainability. For the Ganger nursery, sustainability means careful use of natural resources in harmony with nature and environmentally conscious behavior to shape a future worth living in. Excess irrigation water e.g. B. is collected and recycled so that it can be used again as irrigation water. The NaKu organic bags are also used, which are 100% plastic-free, recyclable and compostable and free of harmful substances.
Awarded the “Good things from the farm” seal of quality, the company is very well networked with partner companies, resulting in short transport routes to protect the environment. Long-term partnerships with farmers and fair payment for their work and products are very important to the Ganger nursery. This also keeps the added value in the region.
The Ganger nursery is located in Vienna, in the 22nd district on Aspernstraße. As soon as you enter the nursery, the beautifully furnished farm shop catches your eye, past the farm shop you will immediately find a huge selection of plants and you will see the first greenhouses in which tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers and much more are grown. to be grown.
Let's stay with the vegetables - the motto "From the region for the region" speaks for itself. Around 214 types of vegetables are on offer, 78 different types of tomato alone, 28 types of peppers, 30 different types of pepperoni & chillies, 13 types of eggplant, 12 types of zucchini and 16 different types of cucumber make the hearts of vegetable lovers beat faster.
The garden center Ganger cultivates its vegetables “naturally”. This means that it is grown according to IP guidelines (=integrated production). "Beneficial insects" & "natural additives" allow the plants to thrive until they are fruitful.
100 different herbs from pineapple sage to lemongrass are offered in organic and cultivated with beneficial insects. Ornamental plants for beds and balconies as well as indoor plants for the home and office complete the range. For example, the range of flowers includes 70 different varieties of standing pelargoniums, surfinias, fuchsias, begonias, winter hardies and a total of around 350 different types of flowers. Anyone who needs cut flowers or bouquets for a specific occasion will find what they are looking for in the floristry department.
A wide range of organic seeds, Kiepenkerl and pure seeds will find all those who want to grow themselves. There is a wide range of soils to choose from for every purpose.
In addition to fresh fruit and vegetables, the Abhof shop also offers sweets and sours in reusable jars, such as a wide variety of jams, ketchup (yellow and red), alvar, artichokes, kimchi, corn, savory pickles, pickles, sauerkraut and salads made from green beans, peppers, red peppers Beets, Zeller, and much more. A farmer's market also takes place several times a year on selected dates.
The garden center Ganger also offers very interesting workshops and courses for different school levels. As a certified Green Care company with training for “School in Gardening”, it is a major concern of the Ganger Gardeners to raise awareness of healthy eating among the youngest in kindergartens and schools and to impart knowledge about the natural cultivation of vegetables. Topics here are “Salad everyone likes! - Getting to know and processing different salads", "At the root of taste - growing, caring for, harvesting, processing in the field", "Herb magic - Interesting facts about herbs - growing, caring for, harvesting, processing" and "Vegetables in the nursery - children plant plant children – a look behind the scenes”.
a look behind the scenes
We were also allowed to take a look behind the scenes with Daniel Ganger and we were impressed. Our foray through the greenhouses for the cultivation of tomatoes, peppers, courgettes, aubergine, ... was very interesting, the variety of different types of tomato alone surprised us very much. And in terms of taste - we were able to taste tomatoes fresh from the perennial - wonderful! In addition to natural cultivation, natural methods are also used for pest control and you can taste it.
Everything is freshly harvested and goes straight to the Abhof shop. Freshly harvested lettuce is packed in NaKu organic bags beforehand to preserve this freshness even better. The large open spaces behind the greenhouses are managed very carefully, the soil is naturally prepared for this purpose, waste from the company is also composted here accordingly.
A very special offer – at the Ganger nursery you can have tomato and pepper plants grown in advance and then plant them at home in the appropriate size.
NaKu organic bags at the Ganger nursery
To ensure that fresh food stays fresh for longer, the Ganger nursery uses our NaKu organic bags made from natural plastic. The organic bags can also be used at home to store the freshly harvested vegetables in the refrigerator or cellar, because they are free of harmful substances, biodegradable and breathable, and thus keep vegetables and fruit, but also bread and pastries, fresh for longer.
Due to the freshness effect of the bag made of bioplastics (vegetable/renewable raw materials), less food has to be thrown away, which in turn makes a valuable contribution to environmental and climate protection. Tip: The organic bag can also be used as a bag for rubbish/organic waste after it has been used several times to store food.
