The plastic bag dilemma

On March 1, 2021 at 20:15 p.m., ORF III broadcast a report about plastic bags, the effects of plastic on the environment and alternatives to plastic. The camera team was on site in June and interviewed our managing director, Mr. Zimmermann, on the subject of bioplastics and our products. We can be seen in the film from minute 33.

The documentary is about the effects of plastic on the environment and also highlights the advantages and disadvantages of the alternatives: bioplastics and paper. Paper performs even worse than plastic. With bioplastics it is more complicated, because there are big differences. Our natural plastic differs from other bioplastics in that it is both renewable and biodegradable. The special NaKu bags, which are still permitted in retail in accordance with the ban on plastic bags, are TÜV-certified by OK Compost Home. Our corn is grown in Europe without genetic engineering and is also processed there into a raw material without the addition of harmful substances in order to pollute the environment as little as possible.

A short explanation on degradability: In the report, bioplastic bags are buried in the ground and dug up again after six months, since OK compost HOME certified bags are said to be 90% degradable after six months. However, this only applies to composting, ie things go faster in the compost because there are enough microorganisms to break them down. There are fewer in the ground, so it takes a little longer, but it still breaks down (as you can see well in the report). It is very difficult to say how long the process will take, as it depends on the microflora in the soil and the temperature. But it is precisely this slowed-down process that we use in our plant bags, where plants can be planted together with a NaKu bag, which then ensures permanent moisture in the roots and therefore better plant growth until they are completely broken down.
