Information poster Donauinselfest InnoWAP project

InnoWAP Research – Project presentation at the Donauinselfest 2025

The InnoWAP project was presented on the Sustainability Island

What does InnoWAP mean and what are its goals? Innovative valorization of aquatic plants from the Danube region in a decentralized biorefinery.

InnoWAP is an innovative project that aims to utilize aquatic and marsh plants (WASU) as sustainable resources. By developing a decentralized processing process, these plants are transformed into valuable raw materials for bio-based products. This project strengthens the circular economy and addresses ecological challenges such as silting of water bodies and the preservation of biodiversity.

InnoWAP: Innovative valorization of aquatic plants from the Danube region

The core objectives of the InnoWAP project

  • Establishment of a value chain for WaSu to promote the bio-based circular economy.
  • Conducting a potential analysis to identify and map different types and quantities of wastewater.
  • Creation of a reliable supply chain for the material use of wastewater.
  • Development and optimization of a decentralized processing process that enables the conversion of wastewater into processable and valuable raw materials that can be used for the production of bio-based products such as packaging, textiles and specialty papers.
  • Contributing to global sustainability goals by creating jobs, promoting sustainable industries and infrastructure, improving flood protection through wetland restoration, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and strengthening wetland ecosystem services.

InnoWAP – A contribution to the following SDGs

  • SDG 8: Promote regional value creation and job creation.
  • SDG 9: Develop sustainable industries through innovative use of wastewater.
  • SDG 11: Support wetland restoration and improve flood protection.
  • SDG 13: Contribute to climate protection through CO₂ sequestration in bio-based products.
  • SDG 15: Strengthen ecosystem services and support wetland restoration.

The innovative content of this project

InnoWAP represents a holistic approach that combines the use of aquatic and marsh plants with the goal of promoting ecological sustainability and generating economic stimulus. The project aims to be a flagship project that attracts attention through ambitious goals and innovative solutions.

The InnoWAP project team looks forward to continued collaboration and the exciting results achieved within the project. Together, we will demonstrate how the integration of bio-based products into a circular economy can both protect the environment and create new economic opportunities.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions about the InnoWAP project

What is the InnoWAP project about?

The InnoWAP project focuses on the "Innovative Valorization of Aquatic Plants from the Danube Region." The goal is to develop a decentralized value creation strategy to convert locally produced aquatic plants into valuable raw materials for bio-based products.

What was presented at the Donauinselfest 2025?

NaKu presented the InnoWAP project at the first-ever Sustainability Island at the Donauinselfest 2025. Visitors were able to learn interactively how bioplastics work and how aquatic plants can be used to produce bio-based products.

What connection does the project have to Lake Neusiedl?

The InnoWAP project incorporates aquatic plants, particularly reeds, from Lake Neusiedl into its innovative value creation strategy. The aim is to address ecological challenges such as lake silting and biodiversity conservation through the use of these plants.

InnoWAP is being funded under the Circular Economy and
Production technologies 2024 funded by the BMIMI and managed by the FFG.
