Natural plastic is very similar to conventional plastic in terms of its properties, but it is produced on the basis of plants and therefore offers an environmentally friendly alternative to petroleum products. At NaKu, all products are made from renewable raw materials and are completely biodegradable.
If there is no NaKu sales outlet near you, you can of course either order the products you want directly online in the NaKu webshop or simply contact NaKu by phone or email.
Only materials are added that comply with the strict requirements of DIN 13432, the applicable standard for biodegradable materials. After our products have decomposed, grade A compost is produced again and thus the best nutrients for new plants.
It is very important to us that the starch used in our products is GMO-free. We have the corresponding certificates from our raw material suppliers. We believe that anything intended to be returned to nature must not be genetically modified. That would contradict our philosophy. The only drawback: all the advantages of our product (GMO-free, European cultivation, Austrian value creation, CO2 - saving production, food-safe, biodegradable, particularly breathable, etc.) are unfortunately still reflected in the production costs.
The NaKu (Natural Plastic) brand offers a wide range of bioplastic products for everyday use, based on renewable raw materials such as cornstarch and sugar. The product range includes typical everyday essentials like biodegradable food storage bags, biodegradable freezer bags, and various biodegradable carrier bags, as well as PLA/rPLA bottles and containers, such as those for "NOT PLASTIC WATER" or special cooking oil bottles, complemented by biodegradable garbage bags, biodegradable dog waste bags, and compostable biocards.
NaKu is not happy when biodegradable plastic (un)intentionally ends up in nature, even though natural plastics are completely biodegradable sooner or later. Their lifespan depends on several factors: moisture, agitation, oxygen supply, etc. Optimal conditions prevail in an industrial composting facility: there, the temperature is always around 60°C, there are many bacteria, and constant agitation. Under these conditions, the decomposition process takes about 3-5 days. In an agricultural manure heap, for example, which is turned regularly, it takes 9-12 weeks for our NaKu bags to decompose in warm weather.
The processing of natural plastics (NaKu) granules requires similar amounts of energy to the processing of conventional plastics. Due to their compostability and the fact that the raw material is produced from renewable resources, natural plastic carrier bags currently have a slightly better energy balance than the same items made from conventional plastic. The significant advantage of using natural plastics lies in their CO2 balance and thus their impact on the climate and climate change. For NaKu, it is crucial for our future (and that of our descendants) that modern technologies are circular and can renew themselves without permanently depleting the Earth's resources. Natural plastics represent a major step in this direction, as their cycle remains closed: from the plant to the natural plastic and back to the Earth through decomposition.
Even though they look very similar to conventional plastic, NaKu products are natural products that are subject to aging. NaKu guarantees the quality of, for example, its food storage bags for the first 6 months after purchase. The products are usually shipped directly from the production line. In that case, there should be little change for the first 12 months. After about 14 months, the product may lose approximately 10-15% of its load-bearing capacity. After about 36 months (depending on storage conditions), NaKu bags will gradually become brittle and porous. They would disintegrate, as is intended to happen at the end of the product life cycle.
Of course. Multiple uses, along with their versatility, are fundamental to NaKu's sustainability philosophy. You can refill, wash, and reuse the NaKu bags again and again. However, if mold does get into the NaKu food storage bag, the decomposition process will begin. In this case, it should not be used again. The bag will then serve its final purpose and can be used once more as a compostable waste bag.
In the NaKu webshop you will find all NaKu products made from natural plastic. The webshop also provides information on products that NaKu can manufacture on request, for example bags printed with a company logo or B2B products.
Bioplastic packaging and products from NaKu can primarily be purchased in Germany via the NaKu online shop (eshop.naku.at). For products specifically shipped to Germany, please check the delivery options and availability directly in the online shop.
NaKu is a company that focuses intensively on the development and production of products made from natural plastics , placing great emphasis on sustainability. This is reflected in the use of non-GMO, rapidly renewable, plant-based raw materials (cornstarch, sugar) and the focus on biodegradable or compostable end products that do not form persistent microplastics.
NaKu offers effective alternatives to petroleum-based plastics: PLA/rPLA bottles and cans replace PET and are free of plasticizers. The bio-based bags (for storing food, freezing, and garbage) made from cornstarch are a compostable alternative to conventional plastic bags, and the biopolymer films serve as a compostable alternative to petroleum-based films such as PVC.
NaKu produces a wide range of biodegradable and DIN 13432 compostable bioplastic bags (so-called "bags"). These include biodegradable food storage bags, biodegradable garbage bags, biodegradable carrier bags for retail and pharmacies, and biodegradable dog waste bags, all of which are produced using non-GMO cornstarch from European agriculture.
One manufacturer that offers bioplastic films for food packaging is NaKu . They produce biopolymer film based on rapidly renewable plant raw materials (sugar and cornstarch), which is a compostable alternative to conventional films and is used, for example, for food storage bags or as liner bags for organic produce boxes.
For gardening and landscaping, NaKu offers specialized bioplastic products that are biodegradable in the soil. These include biodegradable plant bags that can be placed directly into the ground with the plant and decompose slowly, as well as compostable plant labels, loop labels, and biodegradable tree protectors to prevent the formation of microplastics in the soil.
Bioplastic drinking bottles are a more environmentally conscious alternative to conventional plastic bottles. They are typically made from bio-based polymers whose raw materials are derived from renewable sources such as sugarcane, like PLA. These bottles are designed to meet the same requirements for food safety, durability, and reusability as standard plastic bottles, while reducing reliance on fossil resources.
The term bioplastic is an umbrella term for all polymers that are either partially or entirely made from renewable raw materials (bio-based) or that are biodegradable . These materials serve as a replacement or supplement to plastics derived from petroleum. The focus is on utilizing alternative sources and/or contributing to the improved decomposition of the materials at the end of their life cycle.
Yes, bioplastic bags are widely used, especially as compostable shopping bags or bin bags for organic waste. They differ from conventional plastic bags in that they are usually made from bio-based and/or biodegradable polymers. The advantage is that they are designed to decompose completely under the right conditions (usually in industrial composting facilities).
Bioplastics are used for a wide range of packaging, from flexible films and bags to rigid trays, containers, and bottles. They are used in the food industry, cosmetics, and many single-use products to facilitate a material shift towards bio-based or biodegradable alternatives.
The main advantages of bioplastics include reducing dependence on petroleum , potentially lower greenhouse gas emissions through the binding of CO2 during plant growth, and the possibility of developing materials suitable for specific applications and/or industrial composting .
In the strict sense of industrial manufacturing, it is not possible for private individuals to produce marketable bioplastics themselves. However, simple prototypes similar to plastic can be made in the kitchen using starch, water, and vinegar. These serve to demonstrate the principles but do not possess any commercial properties.
Bioplastics are playing an increasingly important role in global trade and the economy, as companies increasingly seek more environmentally friendly solutions and laws in many regions restrict the use of single-use plastics. They are sold as raw granules to processors and find their way into retail stores as finished products (packaging, equipment).
PLA (polylactic acid) is one of the best-known bioplastics. PLA is bio-based and biodegradable under industrial conditions. It is frequently used for packaging materials, disposable tableware, fibers, and is the preferred material in 3D printing.
The range of products made from bioplastics is very diverse, extending from short-lived items such as films, cutlery, and bags to more durable goods like housings and drinking bottles . In principle, many conventional plastic products can be replaced by bio-based alternatives.
The main motivation for manufacturing products from bioplastics lies in reducing environmental impact , particularly the consumption of fossil resources and the potential reduction of persistent plastic waste through biodegradable options. Furthermore, they meet a growing market demand for environmentally friendly materials.

Fake bio-bags are “conventional” plastic bags that are falsely declared as biodegradable, even though they are made of conventional petroleum-based plastics such as polyethylene.
This deception harms the environment, undermines trust in sustainable products, and misleads consumers and retailers.
Since 2021, NaKu has been reporting on an increasing number of counterfeit organic bags on the Austrian market.
Genuine biodegradable bags are more expensive to produce. To cut costs, some manufacturers use cheap polyethylene and claim to be biodegradable.
In addition to environmental pollution, this results in a loss of trust in the bioplastics industry and a distortion of competition against honest manufacturers.
Both consumers and retailers and waste disposal companies who fall for the false declaration.
NaKu recommends three simple self-tests: rustling & haptic, floating test and burning test.
Real organic bags rustle more muffled and quietly. Fake polyethylene bags sound tinny and loud.
Bioplastics are velvety and soft. Polyethylene, on the other hand, feels stiff and slightly greasy.
Bioplastics have a higher density than water and sink. Polyethylene floats on top—especially noticeable in salt water with soap.
When burned, bioplastics smell sweet and burn quietly. Polyethylene has a pungent odor and burns with a sooty flame.

NaKu bioplastic is a natural, sustainable, and compostable plastic. It is made from renewable raw materials such as corn starch and lactic acid and is free of harmful substances.
The cycle begins with the production of granulate from renewable raw materials. This granulate is processed into various products that can be either recycled or composted after use. When composted according to the EN 13432 standard, the plastic is converted into biogenic mass within 90 days.
NaKu bioplastic has several advantages: It is free of harmful substances, produces less CO2 emissions , conserves petroleum resources, and is compostable. Some products, such as the NaKu bags, are also breathable, thus extending the freshness of food.
Light and biodegradable bags that are thinner than 15 µm may continue to be handed out by retailers. So also our NaKu bags.
For the production of the NaKu Sackerl, NaKu uses starch from corn from European agriculture. Natural plastic feels pleasantly soft and velvety to the touch and is still tear-resistant.
The natural plastic is compostable according to DIN EN 13432 (TÜV certified). In industrial compost, for example, the composting process for a pharmacy bag takes about 3-5 days. In home compost, if it's regularly turned, it takes 9-12 weeks in warm weather for our pharmacy bag to compost.
With our NaKu bags you can keep your groceries such as bread, vegetables and fruit fresh for longer. In a study by BOKU, apples, mangoes, tomatoes, chanterelles, lettuce, bread and rolls were stored in three different ways: open, in plastic bags and in NaKu bags. The result is clear. Bread, for example, lasts more than twice as long in the NaKu bag as when stored open and also retains its taste compared to the plastic bag. Apples keep their taste, especially when stored in the NaKu bag. The situation is similar for lettuce and other foods.
Our NaKu bags therefore reduce food waste. Less food waste also means fewer CO2 emissions. With our NaKu bags, you can make a valuable contribution to environmental and climate protection.
NaKu bags can not only be used once, but can also be used several times thanks to their tear resistance. In the end, they can be used as organic waste bags - NaKu bags completely decompose in the compost!
By using renewable raw materials, our NaKu bag produces only about half the CO2 emissions of conventional plastic bags. Compared to a paper bag, which weighs significantly more for the same size, it produces even less than half the emissions.
The NaKu bags are significantly lighter than paper bags. This means we require significantly fewer raw materials in production – and we pass this cost advantage on to you.
Only non-GMO corn from European agriculture is used to produce the starch.
For environmental protection and health, we do not add any harmful substances such as bisphenol A, antimony or phthalates.
NaKu is an Austrian company based in Wiener Neustadt.
By using rapidly renewable raw materials, our NaKu bag produces only about half the CO2 emissions of conventional plastic bags. Compared to a paper bag, which weighs significantly more for the same size, it produces even less than half the emissions.
For environmental protection and health, we do not add any harmful substances such as bisphenol A, antimony or phthalates.
With the NaKu bag made of bioplastic, you can keep your food such as bread, vegetables, and fruit fresher for longer. In a study conducted by the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna, apples, mangos, tomatoes, chanterelle mushrooms, lettuce, bread, and rolls were stored in three different ways: open, in plastic bags, and in NaKu bags. The results are clear. Bread, for example, lasts more than twice as long in the NaKu bag than when stored openly and also retains its flavor compared to the plastic bag. Apples retain their flavor particularly well when stored in the NaKu bag. The situation is similar for lettuce and other foods.
Our NaKu bags therefore reduce food waste. Less food waste also means less CO2 emissions . With our NaKu bags, you can make a valuable contribution to environmental and climate protection.
When storing apples, the NaKu bag clearly wins over the plastic bag and open storage. The taste and appearance was rated as the best on all five test days in the NaKu bag. Even after 3 months, the apples in the NaKu bag were still rated as natural and fresh.
Mangoes stored in NaKu bags stay fresh longer than mangoes in plastic bags or stored open. After 17 days, bacterial and fungal growth was less advanced in mangoes in the NaKu bag than in the other storage variants.
A tight result, but the NaKu bag also wins over the plastic bag and open storage for tomatoes. Samples from the NaKu bag had the least bacterial contamination, but when it came to fungal contamination, open storage was just the best. In terms of taste, these two variants are the same, but the NaKu bag scores points because less weight is lost and the tomatoes don't dry out as quickly.
Lettuce in a plastic bag developed an unpleasant musty smell after just two days and started to rot after a week. Stored open, on the other hand, lettuce began to wilt after two days and spoiled after 10 days. In the NaKu bag, the salad was still edible after two weeks.
Chanterelles stored in the NaKu bag retained their fresh appearance and fresh, typical smell during the first 8 days of storage. They looked almost freshly harvested, only the edges of the mushroom caps dried slightly in some places during the second week and turned dark. Stored openly, this happened after just one week. A foul smell developed in the plastic bag after a very short time. The mushrooms in the NaKu bag still retained their typical smell 3 weeks later.
Bread in the NaKu bag can be enjoyed for nine days, stored open only four days. In the plastic bag, on the other hand, it quickly loses its taste, even if the consistency is retained for the longest time. It was similar with the rolls. Stored open, the rolls were already hard after one day, in the NaKu bag only after two days. The rolls stayed soft for four days in the plastic bag, but lost their typical taste after just one day.
According to a study, over 12 million tons of plastic enter the world's oceans every year. That's equivalent to a full garbage truck every minute.
Plastic pollution has massive consequences for the ocean ecosystem. Every year, one million birds and 100.000 marine mammals, such as whales, dolphins, and seals, die as a result of the pollution.
NaKu products are completely biodegradable and decompose naturally. However, they should not be carelessly discarded, as natural plastic has no place in the environment.
Microplastics are plastic particles smaller than five millimeters. They are formed by the decomposition of larger plastic particles in the environment, such as the ocean.
According to a WWF study, the average person consumes about five grams of plastic per week, which is equivalent to the weight of a credit card.
Yes, NaKu products are biodegradable. When decomposed in the environment, all of the plastic is broken down, so no harmful, persistent microplastic particles are created.
Microplastics are plastic pieces smaller than five millimeters in size. They are divided into primary and secondary microplastics. Primary microplastics are produced in this small size for products such as cosmetics or are created as abrasion, for example, from car tires. Secondary microplastics form when larger plastic pieces degrade due to environmental influences such as UV radiation and mechanical stress. Microplastics enter the ocean via rivers, artificial turf granules, or sewage sludge, which is used as fertilizer in agriculture.
Microplastics can enter the human body through the food chain. The particles can bind to harmful substances, which are then released upon ingestion. These harmful substances can disrupt the hormonal system. Particularly small nanoplastics can even pass through cell membranes and penetrate every part of the body. It is estimated that the average person ingests five grams of plastic per week, equivalent to the weight of a credit card.
NaKu's natural plastic is biodegradable. This means that upon decomposition, the entire plastic breaks down, leaving no harmful, persistent microplastic particles in the environment. In contrast, conventional plastic in the ocean takes 300 to 450 years to degrade, leaving behind microplastics and nanoplastics.
Plastic waste enters the environment in various ways. Much of it is carelessly discarded, from streets and parking lots, and eventually ends up in rivers like the Danube, which washes into the sea. Every year, over 12 million tons of plastic are washed into the world's oceans, in addition to over a million tons of fishing nets abandoned by ships. Contrary to popular belief that most plastic floats on the surface, the majority (an estimated 94%) sinks to the seabed due to its density. Only 1% floats on the surface, while about 5% washes up on beaches. On the seabed, an average of 70 kg of plastic per km² is found, and on beaches, as much as 2.000 kg per km².
The consequences of plastic pollution for the ocean ecosystem are serious. Every year, one million birds and 100.000 marine mammals, such as whales, dolphins, and seals, die worldwide as a result of plastic pollution. Discarded fishing nets, in particular, pose a major threat, as marine animals become entangled in them and die a miserable death.
NaKu recommends the three "Vs": Avoid, Reduce, Improve. To reduce plastic waste, use reusable packaging and ensure proper waste separation. If reusable packaging or avoidance isn't possible, compostable bioplastics made from renewable resources offer a more environmentally friendly alternative. It's also important to avoid products that deliberately contain microplastics, such as some toothpastes, shower gels, or scrubs.
At the EU level, 88 million tons of food end up in the trash every year. 53% of this comes from private households. In an average household, a quarter of the food purchased is wasted.
Vegetables, bread and dairy products top the list of the most frequently thrown away foods.
NaKu organic bags made from natural plastic are breathable and keep food like bread, fruit, and vegetables fresher longer, reducing waste. This not only protects the environment and valuable resources, but also saves money.
Plastic waste enters the sea from land and ships. From land, plastic is often simply discarded or enters the sea via rivers like the Danube. Over 12 million tons of plastic end up in the world's oceans annually. Over 1 million tons of fishing nets and 0,6 million tons of plastic are thrown overboard from ships each year.
The majority of plastic in the ocean, an estimated 94%, sinks to the seafloor. Only 1% floats on the surface, and 5% is washed up on beaches. Ocean currents cause enormous amounts of plastic waste to accumulate in so-called "plastic islands." The largest of these is the Great Pacific Garbage Patch, which is 19 times the size of Austria.
The consequences for marine animals are devastating. One million birds and 100.000 marine mammals die annually from plastic pollution. Many animals mistake plastic for food and starve to death with full stomachs. Fishing nets are particularly dangerous, as marine animals become entangled in them and die a miserable death. A forecast by the Ellen MacArthur Foundation predicts that by 2050, there will be more plastic than fish in the ocean.
As a countermeasure, we recommend using reusable packaging, ensuring proper waste separation, and following the 3 "V"s: Avoid, Reduce, Improve. If disposable products are unavoidable, more environmentally friendly alternatives made from renewable and biodegradable raw materials can be a solution.

NaKu bio-labels are printed directly, with full-color printing on the front and direct printing on the back. Suitable printers are available from NaKu. Thermal paper contains chemical coatings that release pollutants during composting. By eliminating these coatings, the entire process remains free of pollutants and residues.
They are made from rapidly renewable plant-based raw materials, are certified compostable according to DIN 13432, and leave no persistent microplastics behind. Unlike PVC products, the biopolymer film decomposes completely into biomass.
The clip, net, and bar label are all made from the same polymer family. The entire packaging unit can therefore be composted without separation. There are no problematic material mixtures of metal, paper, and plastic.
They are suitable wherever products need to be labelled quickly and clearly. In the food trade, in nurseries, in fresh produce packaging, and in fruit and vegetable nets.
The biopolymer film is modeled on normal paper and offers a similar feel and similar properties. "Normal" paper takes ages to decompose, but the biopolymer film offers many other advantages. No persistent microplastics are produced when the biopolymer film decomposes/composts. The production of the biopolymer film is also nowhere near as energy-intensive as the production of "normal" paper.
The production and energy required for paper production is many times higher than for the production of bio-polymer film. The production process of paper itself, with all its additives, bleaching and drying processes, also takes longer, and an enormous amount of water is needed to produce paper. Bio-polymer film does not contain any chemical additives.
There are of course areas of application where the use of biopolymer film does not make sense. Biopolymer film is useful where a certain durability is required, but then at the end of the life cycle the issues of rotting, composting and recycling play a role. The raw materials required should also not be overlooked. Biopolymer film is based on rapidly renewable plant-based raw materials (sugar & corn), paper from slow-growing trees. Conventional paper is well used where the application is either very short-lived or very long-lasting.
The biopolymer film is suitable, for example, for plant markers (direct earth contact/ground contact), clothing tags for high-quality clothing, labels, poster walls, banners, etc. The biopolymer film shows its great advantage wherever conventional products based on, for example, PVC would otherwise be introduced into nature.
It is based on rapidly renewable plant-based raw materials, specifically starch and sugar.
The biopolymer film decomposes significantly faster than paper or films made of PVC or similar materials, and no chemical residues remain in nature. The biopolymer film decomposes back into biomass during decomposition, and no persistent microplastics are produced.
The bio-polymer film can be composted in an industrial composting plant according to DIN 13432.
The biopolymer film can be recycled and reused for another product. Production waste such as edge trimmings are recycled in the production process itself. Recycling "normal" paper, on the other hand, is very energy-intensive, produces many pollutants, and recycled paper is generally no longer suitable for contact with food. The biopolymer film, on the other hand, can be reprocessed in such a way that contact with food is possible/permitted again.
The bio-polymer film is intended for completely different purposes and not as copy or printer paper.
The bio-polymer film is produced in Austria.
