Biopolymers can be produced from many different raw materials. NaKu uses a corn-based starch compound to produce their breathable fresh-storage bags. NaKu bottles use a starch-based PLA (lactic acid) as raw material, which is made particularly from cornstarch.
It is relatively new that NaKu has started using sunflowers as resource to create our office and storefront display cases. The seed husks are used as raw material for natural polymer in an upcycling process.
The basis of natural polymer is renewable raw material that is refined into a compound. The compound is a fine, grainy substance that can be further processed. Depending on its intended use, either corn starch or lactic acid will be the source.
NaKu’s Natural polymers fulfill both requirements. NaKu products are only made of renewable resources or fully degradable materials AND are biodegradable. That's unique!
Modern technology allows for the production of different biopolymers. These are usually made of plants from native agriculture like potatoes, corn, or grain. Bio-based polymers manufactured that way are very similar to their conventional counterparts.
The difference is that if our natural polymer is exposed to a combination of sun, humidity and bacteria, it rots completely. Therefore, your NaKu products, always made of natural polymer, can be disposed with the household waste or be composted.

To process natural polymer into a desired form, there are different methods that are ideal for each area of application. Each procedure starts with the fusing of the compound in a machine that works similarly to a heated meat grinder. NaKu mostly works with the following procedures:
Deep Drawing (thermoforming)
The vision of NaKu is to combine bio and recycling. Natural polymers should primarily be recycled. The two supreme disciplines of sustainability belong to a combination of regrowth and recycling. With our products, sorting, recycling and the hundred percent recovery of the molecular building blocks work very well.
Our bags are compostable and made of renewable resources. Due to their size, our bags are ideal for collecting organic waste. In this case, the bag can then be composted with the waste and is still useful after its End of Life. However, if our bags are thrown away empty, better use the synthetic material garbage bin because in this case the bag gets recycled.
Our NaKu bottle should be disposed that way as well because they will be included in the recycling process.
Natural polymer is biodegradable. This means that it is compostable in accordance to the DIN standard EN 13432 and therefore fulfills the requirement to degrade to biogenic material within 90 days. Natural polymer is also combustible and recyclable; this means we can reuse it for the manufacturing of other products.
The amount of time for its decomposition mainly depends on the wall thickness of the biopolymer and the composting conditions (i.e., heat, humidity, bacteria, fungi).
We think that recycling and biodegradability are the most advantageous ways of recycling bio-plastics. In our opinion, the combustion of polymers is an old fashioned way of recycling waste. But of course, our NaKu bottle and bags are also thermally recyclable. The calorific value of bio-plastic is 20kJ / kg. Due to the natural raw materials and the natural biodegradability, our NaKu products ensure a much lower emission of exhaust gases at decomposition by incineration.
